Chirlane I. McCray (born 1954) is a writer, poet, editor, communications professional, and political figure. She has published poetry and worked in politics as a speechwriter. Married to current New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, she is the First Lady of New York City. They have two children, Chiara and Dante. They plan to move from their home in Park Slope, Brooklyn, into Gracie Mansion, the traditional residence of New York City mayors. Reference

Today, Feb 14th 2014 over 1 BILLION people are rising with love to prevent violence against women and girls during the V-Day event world-wide. The movement, which involves a series of creative events promoting awareness of abuse in over 200 countries, will raise money to focus attention on women’s issues such as rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sex slavery.

The foundation supports local activists producing benefit performances of Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues and other creative ventures. Performance proceeds are invested in local anti-violence activities.
Every year star-studded V-Day performances raise millions for  abuse awareness. This year NYC officially declared February 14th #1BillionRising for Justice Day.
